Microsoft’s announcement of the end of support for Dynamics GP has prompted many organizations to evaluate their ERP strategy.
For companies considering Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, the questions are predictable: How much will migration cost? What happens to our historical data? Can we preserve our customizations?
However, there is a more important question:

Should we simply migrate our existing system, or use this opportunity to improve how our business operates?
Business Central Is Not Simply Dynamics GP in the Cloud
Although Dynamics GP and Business Central share many ERP capabilities, they are fundamentally different products.
Business Central offers a modern, cloud-oriented architecture, extensive integration capabilities, and an extension-based approach to customization.
Moving between these platforms requires more than transferring data and recreating existing functionality.
It requires evaluating how business processes should operate in the new environment.
Three Important Migration Considerations
1. Reevaluate existing customizations
Over the years, many Dynamics GP customers have developed customizations to address specific business requirements.
Before recreating them in Business Central, determine whether standard functionality, configuration, or existing extensions can satisfy those needs.
Some customizations may no longer be necessary.
2. Develop a practical historical data strategy
Not every historical transaction needs to be migrated.
Depending on business and regulatory requirements, transferring master records, open transactions, and selected balances may be sufficient.
Historical information can remain accessible through a separate reporting environment.
3. Take the opportunity to improve business processes
A migration is an excellent time to reconsider your chart of accounts, financial dimensions, reporting processes, integrations, and approval workflows.
These improvements can deliver significantly more long-term value than simply reproducing your existing ERP environment.
